Penguin Printmaking
Second grade students were introduced to the Printmaking process by creating relief prints of penguins. We began the unit by discussing where penguins live, what they eat, how they act, and reading the book Without You, by Sarah Weeks, Illustrated by Suzanne Duranceau. Then students drew their penguins using basic shapes, adding a background and details to show the penguin's environment. When drawings were complete the students transferred them to scratch-foam by placing their drawing on top of the foam, then pushing their lines through with pen. It was important for us to go back and check our lines in the scratch-foam, as we learned that lines pushed down do not receive ink and remain the color of the paper; anything not pushed down will receive ink and be black. Finally Second grade students used the printmaking materials, rolling ink onto the scratch-foam printing plates with a brayer, then pressing and rubbing paper on top to create their print. We glued our dry prints to color paper and added line and shape patters to the border to give a final touch to our artwork. Great job Second grade!
