Third Grade
"My Art Folder
Students began the year constructing personal folders to house their artwork. The art problem was to create a composition with their names (to fill the space of the paper) and then embellish with patterns of line, shape, and color.

"The Circus is in Town!"
During the second unit, students in third grade were introduced to the famous paper cuts by the well-known French artist Henri Matisse. Students were challenged to draw their action figures using contour line. The additional art problem presented to third grade was to demonstrate an understanding of how to create movement and pattern within their compositions. Students used colorful fadeless paper to create spotlights, camera flashes, an audience cheering and enjoying the many acts going on in each of the three rings.

Repousse Robots
Third grade students designed robots by combining basic geometric shapes and then carefully transferring their completed sketches to a sheet of aluminum using a ball point pen. Students learned the technique of Repousse, in which they used a variety of tools to decorate and emboss the aluminum by raising the surface of areas they wanted to be in relief. Sharpie markers were then used to add color to the aluminum and students added line and shape patterns to their color border.
